NEW YORK — Sprint Nextel and Palm enjoyed a weekend of lines and brisk sales for the Pre smart phone, but the biggest question now is how long they can keep the hype alive. The Pre delivered on high expectations that positioned it as an iPhone rival, resulting in weekend sales estimates that ranged between 50,000 and 100,000 units. Sprint said it had the best first-day and first-weekend sales performance in the company’s history.
Now comes the tough task of sustaining that momentum by replenishing sold-out stores and dealing with rising competition. Apple took a bit of the wind out of the Pre’s sails with an iPhone announcement Monday. Dow Jones Newswires
