GRAND JUNCTION — A man suspected of shooting his 13-year-old son to death while he slept will undergo a second mental-health evaluation after prosecutors contested a doctor’s conclusion that he was insane.
Allen Grabe has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the death of his son, Jacob, last September. Prosecutors contend Grabe’s evaluation from the Colorado Mental Health Institute was inadequate. A Mesa County district judge Wednesday granted the request for another evaluation.
Authorities say Grabe, 52, shot his son nine times at their home and told his wife he had to kill him because she was “ruining him.” The boy suffered from Asperger’s syndrome, a disorder similar to autism.
