A mosquito carrying the West Nile virus was trapped last week in Fort Collins, marking the earliest seasonal point health officials in Larimer County have found the virus there.

The first “positive” county posting in a mosquito came from a trap set near South Lemay and Riverside avenues, the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment said in a release.

The positive finding is about three to five weeks earlier than most seasons, the health department said.

“Although the number of mosquitoes is low so far this year, this positive trap confirms that the risk of West Nile infection is present even in June,” Dr. Adrienne LeBailly, Larimer County Health Department director, said in the release.
