Flag Day celebration

Prepare to salute.
For almost 50 years, a 14-by-19-foot American flag has hung on a wall in the Gilpin County Courthouse. The flag, with 38 stars, was the U.S. flag from August 1876 until the Dakotas became the 39th and 40th states in 1889. The flag was donated to the Colorado Historical Society in 1960 and ended up in Central City after two girls there were winners in an essay contest about the flag. The flag was showing wear and tear and has recently been refurbished. Speeches, entertainment by the Gold Diggers band, presentation of flags and refreshments are included in the free event.
