SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Michael Phelps lost the 100-meter freestyle and the 100 backstroke at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix swimming meet Sunday.

The 14-time Olympic gold medalist finished second behind Brent Hayden of Canada in the freestyle. Hayden, the leading qualifier, touched in 48.44 seconds. Phelps was clocked in 48.87.

Phelps then lost to Olympic teammate Ryan Lochte, who was timed in 54.15 to complete a sweep of the backstroke events. Phelps touched second in 54.31.

Valverde takes second title

GRENOBLE, France — Alejandro Valverde of Spain won the Dauphine Libere for the second consecutive year. Valverde ended the 640-mile, eight-day race in 26 hours, 33 minutes, 15 seconds, finishing 16 seconds ahead of Cadel Evans of Australia.

Timothy Duggan of Garmin-Slipstream was second in the final stage.

• Austria’s Bernhard Eisel won the second stage of the Tour of Switzerland in a sprint finish, and Switzerland’s Fabian Cancellara retained the overall lead.

In Rustenburg, South Africa, Fernando Torres scored three goals in the first 17 minutes, powering Spain to a 5-0 rout of New Zealand on the opening day of the Confederations Cup. Iraq tied South Africa 0-0 in Johannesburg.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored two goals in the second half as the host Columbus Crew beat Chivas USA 2-1 to extend its unbeaten streak to nine.

• New Mexico offensive tackle Byron Bell and wide receiver Quintell Solomon were suspended indefinitely following their arrests in Albuquerque, coach Mike Locks- ley said.

• In WNBA action, Sancho Lyttle had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead the visiting Atlanta Dream to a 67-62 victory over the Connecticut Sun. . . . Candice Dupree scored 14 points as the host Chicago Sky beat the Seattle Storm 64-57.

• Former Colorado State star Becky Hammon will miss two WNBA games for San Antonio to play for Russia in the European women’s basketball championships.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.‘s comeback has been postponed because the boxer suffered a rib injury while training. Mayweather’s July 18 fight against Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas will be rescheduled.

Sanya Richards of the United States won the 400 meters in 49.57 seconds at an ISTAF meet in Berlin. It was the fastest time in the world this year.
