GOLDEN, Colo.—An Arvada man convicted of killing his girlfriend’s dog with a bow and arrow has been sentenced to 28 days in jail, plus two years of probation.

Twenty-year-old Zackary Scott Ruszka also was ordered Monday to attend one Alcoholics Anonymous meeting every week for two years, complete mental health and substance abuse evaluations and treatment, and undergo treatment for animal abuse.

Prosecutors say the dog died while Ruszka’s girlfriend and her parents were in California attending to a family emergency in December. Ruszka was living with his girlfriend and her parents at the time. He and another roommate were left in charge of the house and the dog.

Ruszka pleaded guilty to aggravated animal cruelty in April.
