Some like it cold.

That was the theme of Yesterday’s Steak Tasting on Saturday at Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs.

Penny Parker, the Food Network’s Keegan Gerhard from D-Bar, foodie Mike Seader and Yours Truly were the judges, chomping on steaks cooked the night before at Morton’s, Bastien’s, Cap Grille, Elway’s Cherry Creek, Del Frisco’s, Emil-Lene’s, Fleming’s, Rodney’s and Steakhouse 10.

Sometimes a hot prime New York steak ain’t so hot when it’s cold. Too much marbling can make the steak just too fatty. The top four doggie-bag standouts were, in order, Elway’s, Fleming’s, Cap Grille and Rodney’s.

It was some fine eating, friends. And the biggest taste surprise was the fried green beans at Steve’s Snappin’ Dogs. And they won’t wait until tomorrow.

Don’t forget the lyrics.

Two of my favorite bands are coming to Denver this month — and both have a song with lyrics that have been swimming in my head since 19-nevermind.

Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks bring their Tangled Tales Tour to the Soiled Dove on June 26. And the song in my head is:

“How can I miss you when you won’t go away?

I keep telling you day after day,

But you won’t listen, you always stay and stay,

How can I miss you when you won’t go away?”

And Asleep at the Wheel returns to the Arvada Center for a Father’s Day concert Sunday. The band performs a song written by my late friend Peter Sheridan.

“Or was it that cocaine

That caused me to exclaim

When my face hit the floor

Gimme more, gimme more.”

Central party time.

It’s going to be party time in Central City, Black Hawk and Cripple Creek on July 1 because at 12:01 a.m. July 2, $100 stakes kick in, along with craps, roulette and 24-hour gambling. I’m going to be at Fortune Valley Casino in Central City to throw out the first dice. Too bad I don’t know how to play craps — but CC is giving lessons from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and June 26, 29 and 30 at Glenarm Place on the 16th Street Mall.

I remember the first day of gambling in CC on Oct. 1, 1991 — dozens of reporters spent the night up there playing blackjack with fake money. I was at a table with Patty Calhoun, Lynn Bronikowski, Mike Rosen, Peter Boyles and Dick Kreck — and Kreck and I spent the entire evening arguing over who was the bigger hack. Me, obviously. The Last Hack Standing.

City spirit.

NBC sure loves Colorado lately. “Today” ran a story on the barrista who fashions your image in latte form. Studio 6 Coffee boss Michael Keen created the likenesses of Al and Matt and the rest of the gang. And Sunday’s “Nightly News” went up to Estes Park to see the elks hook up. . . . Crested Butte’s Heidi Montag Pratt is finally off “I’m a Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here,” but she’ll be on an upcoming cover of Playboy. . . . Sunset magazine names The Rib House in Longmont and Boulder as the fifth-best BBQ in the West. . . . Sightem: “A Bronx Tale’s” Chazz Palminteri hanging at Suite 200 after his Friday and Saturday night shows at the Ellie. . . . “What Not To Wear” went to Marlowe’s on Friday night for the reveal party. The show will air later on TLC. . . . Sez who: “My favorite animal is steak.” — Author Fran Lebowitz
