HOSPITAL AUDITS

LINCOLN—Audits of two state-run psychiatric hospitals by Nebraska State Auditor Mike Foley’s office show overpayments to employees, lax bill-collection efforts and more spending than authorized by the Legislature. The audits cover the last fiscal year and, all told, report 25 finance-related problems at regional centers in Norfolk and Lincoln. The Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the hospitals, agreed or partially agreed with 20 of the findings. By Nate Jenkins.

BOVINE TB

OMAHA—The state of Nebraska has added 10 more herds to its bovine TB quarantine list, bringing the total to 42. State Agriculture Director Greg Ibach said Tuesday the expansion stems from the sales of cattle that occurred before the herds were quarantined as a precaution. Nebraska has also warned South Dakota and Colorado officials that some of those sold cattle went to their states. There are still only two confirmed cases of bovine TB in the current Nebraska outbreak. By Josh Funk.

SEBELIUS-INDIAN HEALTH CARE

WASHINGTON—Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius says she will launch a new multiyear effort to improve health care for American Indians, which she calls a “historic failure.” Sebelius told The Associated Press Tuesday she will challenge Congress to make the back-burner issue a priority. Part of that strategy would be to recruit more providers for reservations and to focus more on preventive care, which is often neglected in Indian health clinics as dollars run out.
