Huston Street’s ability to dead-end hitters and close out tight games has earned him co-National League player of the week honors.
Street, perfect in five save opportunities in games through Sunday, has been a vital cog in the Rockies’ ongoing 11-game winning streak.
Street shared the honor with Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Mark Reynolds. Reynolds posted a slugging percentage of 1.000 while batting .417 with nine RBIs.
Street, who has converted 13-of-14 save opportunities this season, struck out eight in 4-2/3 innings over four games.
Manager Jim Tracy said Sunday that Street’s recent success has been the direct result of a touch more fastball velocity. During spring training and the early part of the season, Street was pitching in the high 80s or low 90s. Recently, his fastball has ticked 94 mph on occasion. That slight difference has made Street’s slider and changeup more effective.
Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki, who hit .421 with three homers, also received consideration for player of the week.
