Anita Ortiz of Eagle won the Western States Endurance Run, finishing Saturday in 18 hours, 24 minutes, 17 seconds. The race is a 100-mile run along the Western States Trail starting in Squaw Valley, Calif., and ending in Auburn, Calif.
Most of the trail passes through remote and rugged territory, usually accessible only to hikers, horses and helicopters.
Ortiz, 45, finished the race nearly an hour ahead of the runner-up, Krissy Moehl of Seattle.
McConnell makes pro debut.
Former Metro State shortstop Matt McConnell has begun his professional baseball career with the Philadelphia Phillies’ rookie- level affiliate, the Gulf Coast League Phillies.
McConnell was selected in the 36th round of the Major League Baseball draft June 11 and signed a contract two days later. He has played in two of the minor-league team’s three games, including a start at second base Thursday against the GCL Pirates.
Colonel leads Sky Sox.
Christian Colonel’s walkoff RBI single in the 10th inning Sunday gave the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox a 3-2 victory over visiting Portland in a Pacific Coast League game.
Colonel’s hit gave reliever Matt Belisle (1-1) the victory after Belisle pitched two scoreless innings.
Sky Sox starter Alan Johnson allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings. He had five strikeouts.
