An intense fire gutted Dollar City, 4855 Pecos St., a retail store in northwest Denver, on Monday morning.

When firefighters arrived at the burning building at about 2:40 a.m., the front windows had been blown out, and witnesses told fire investigators they had heard several explosions, said Lt. Phil Champagne, a Denver Fire Department spokesman.

Firefighters attacked the blaze for about an hour before the roof caved in from the intense heat.

“Luckily, we didn’t have any firefighters inside at the time of the collapse,” Champagne said.
