GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Two controversial measures to ban some panhandling in Grand Junction have been rejected for now.
The city council turned down two proposals Monday to crack down on panhandling amid legal concerns. Council members ordered one of the ordinances rewritten because of fears it was overbroad and could have banned things like door-to-door sales or political campaigning.
Another ordinance to ban solicitations within 50 feet of many intersections failed to garner the required unanimous vote. Both ordinances could come back for review after being recast.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado wrote to the council raising legal concerns about banning solicitations. About 80 people attended the meeting to protest the proposals.
