LONGMONT, Colo.—Longmont City Council members plan on forgoing two days of pay in what they say is a symbolic show of solidarity with city employees who face furloughs.
The move would save the city about $500 for the seven council members, including the mayor. Councilman Sean McCoy says the idea is not for monetary benefits but to show support for city employees.
The City Council voted last week to make Longmont employees take two unpaid days later this year, on Nov. 27 and Dec. 24. Councilwoman Karen Benker suggested this week that council members could also go without pay on those two days.
The furloughs are expected to save the city about $144,000 as officials deal with a projected $3 million budget shortfall.
