DETROIT — The Pistons and John Kuester were nearing an agreement Tuesday night to make him their coach.

Kuester, who played for the Nuggets during the 1978-79 season, spent the past two seasons as a Cavaliers assistant and was on Larry Brown’s championship-winning staff in 2004 with the Pistons.

He was also an NBA assistant in Orlando, Philadelphia — under Brown — New Jersey and Boston.

The Pistons spoke with Avery Johnson about replacing Michael Curry, but talks with the former Mavericks coach ended Tuesday.

Footnotes.

The Hawks reached an agreement to re-sign point guard Mike Bibby to a three-year deal.

• Rookie guard Rodrigue Beaubois, taken 25th in last month’s draft, signed with the Mavericks.
