WASHINGTON — Farmers must stop giving germ-fighting drugs “for non-medical uses” to cows, chickens and pigs, a top U.S. official said.

Joshua Sharfstein, deputy commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, told a House Judiciary subcommittee Monday that his agency supports proposed legislation to curb the use of antibiotics in healthy animals.

The drugs are given to spur growth or promote feed efficiency, and more use increases the chances that bacteria will develop immunity to treatment.

Steve Ells, founder and co- chief executive of Denver- based Chipotle Mexican Grill, testified about Chipotle’s commitment to serving food from more sustainable sources, including meat from animals that are not given antibiotics.
