DENVER—The cleanup of arsenic and lead from a Denver smelter is wrapping up, with crews scheduled to start the final phase his week.
The smelter plant operated in the Globeville neighborhood of northwest Denver from the late 1880s till the early 1990s. The area was declared a Superfund site in 1999.
The plant has been the subject of several pollution lawsuits. Asarco Inc., which operated the plant, agreed to clean up hundreds of residential properties by removing and replacing contaminated soil.
Asarco filed for bankruptcy protection in 2005. Last month, a bankruptcy court released the final $135,000 to complete the cleanup.
Asarco representatives declined to comment.
