FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Predictions that Colorado’s 4th District would be the hardest fought congressional race on state ballots next year appear to be correct.
Democratic Rep. Betsy Markey raised $260,000 last quarter, with Republican challenger Cory Gardner close behind with $206,000.
Markey defeated three-term Republican Rep. Marilyn Musgrave last year, though Republicans outnumber Democrats in the district. Gardner, a state lawmaker from Yuma, joined the race in May. Also running on the Republican side is a member of the University of Colorado Board of Regents, Tom Lucero of Loveland, who trails Gardner.
Markey has a wider lead on Gardner overall, with more than $500,000 on hand for her re-election, according to a federal disclosure.
