AURORA, Colo.—A letter obtained by the Aurora Sentinel shows Colorado’s third-largest city will be investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice for its lack of African-Americans and Latinos on its police and firefighting forces.
The letter sent to Aurora officials earlier this month says the Justice Department’s civil rights division will examine whether there’s a pattern or practice of discrimination. About 40 percent of the city’s 277,000 people are African-American or Latino, while its police and firefighting departments are about 80 percent white.
City Manager Ron Miller says the city looks forward to cooperating with the Justice Department to find ways to diversify its public-safety department.
