CENTENNIAL, Colo.—The Boulder County district attorney’s office has been appointed special prosecutor to file rape charges against a former University of Colorado football player.
Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers is appealing Judge Carlos Samour’s order that Chambers file rape charges against former CU cornerback Clyde Surrell and another man. Both are accused of assaulting a woman at a high school graduation party in 2000. Both have denied wrongdoing.
Samour ordered Chambers to appoint a special prosecutor, but the Colorado Court of Appeals last week granted that power to Samour. Samour and Chambers have until Aug. 29 to file arguments in Chambers’ challenge to the rare order compelling prosecution.
Samour’s order requires filing of charges by Oct. 5.
