Everyone’s a winner! According to the network spin machines, David Letterman and Conan O’Brien are both triumphant in late night.

“Letterman beats ‘The Tonight Show’ by its largest weekly margin since 2000,” trumpets CBS. “Conan O’Brien rules the week of July 6-10 in the key late-night race,” says NBC.

On closer inspection, Conan does well in the 18-49 demographic, with the median age of his audience (47) a full decade younger than Letterman’s (57). Letterman wins in terms of total viewers, 3.68 million to Conan’s 2.82 million.

This week Letterman got a boost from Paul McCartney’s visit. (He’s “out of the demo,” too.)
