AURORA, Colo.—A lawyer who represents the family of a teen accused of shooting at police says his towed car has been returned, with an apology.

Derek Cole has been critical of a May 9 police shootout that wounded 19-year-old Darius Murray in the head, leaving him partially paralyzed and unable to speak.

Cole says he was on the telephone June 22 trying to set up a meeting about the shooting with Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates when police took his car to harass him. Cole said police on Friday placed his car near the spot from where it was towed, but he said he will have it checked for drugs before he drives it.

Cole said Oates also left a message apologizing for the incident, saying it was based on incorrect information that Cole’s car was improperly registered. Police have denied Cole’s harassment accusations.

Oates did not immediately return a message left by The Associated Press.
