When Golden resident Jim Apelgit first hooked the thresher shark that was to become a Maryland state record, his reaction was pure astonishment.
“It jumped immediately, that huge tail in the air and peeling line.”
Three trips around the boat and 1 hour, 40 minutes later, he had the 15-foot shark on board. The fish was weighed immediately at 642 pounds and later recognized officially as a record for the state.
Fishing about 20 miles out of Ocean City, he used a cocktail of mackerel and squid to attract the shark, using 40-pound-test line.
