NEW YORK — Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya is going on the 15-day disabled list, this time because of a sore right shoulder.

Ryan Perry was recalled Saturday from Triple-A Toledo to replace the oft-injured Zumaya in the bullpen. Zumaya, a 24-year-old right-hander, traveled to Detroit to be examined by a doctor.

Zumaya is 3-3 with a 4.94 ERA and one save in 29 games. He said he felt a slight pop in his pitching shoulder during Friday night’s 5-3 loss to the Yankees, not long after giving up a three-run homer to Mark Teixeira in the seventh inning.

Royals put Meche on DL

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Gil Meche went on the 15-day DL, a move that is sure to rouse critics who say he’s been poorly handled by Royals manager Trey Hillman.

The right-hander (4-9) has been bothered off and on by lower back problems much of the season. Some fans have criticized Hillman for letting Meche throw 114 or more pitches in several outings while his back problems kept flaring up.

Footnotes.

The Cardinals activated utilityman Mark DeRosa from the 15-day DL.

DeRosa, who was acquired June 27 from the Indians, was in the Cardinals’ lineup for three games before hurting his left wrist against San Francisco on June 30. The injury was later diagnosed as a partially torn tendon sheath.

• The Red Sox recalled shortstop Jed Lowrie from Triple-A Pawtucket.

• Angels left fielder Juan Rivera left the game against the Athletics with tightness in his right leg.

• Brewers right-hander Dave Bush will rest his tired pitching arm for five days, pushing back the team’s plans for his return to the rotation. Also, outfielder Ryan Braun has a sore right thumb that kept him out of the lineup.
