Way to go, Watson.
“The old Reebok commercial put it very well: ‘Life is short, play hard.’ As a 42- year-old man still playing rugby on a competitive level, I’ve been living that motto for a long time now. So thanks for the column on golfer Tom Watson at the British Open. It made this old man smile. And, yes, I did forget my bald spot and wrinkles for a bit.”
Dan, Denver
Kiz: If 59-year-old Tom Watson can claim a major championship on the same course in Scotland where he outdueled Jack Nicklaus 32 years ago, then what’s next? A 1977 AMC Pacer winning the Daytona 500? No matter how he finishes in the final round, however, Watson has already done the impossible: For one wonderful week, he has made time stand still for everybody old enough to remember the lyrics to “Fly Like an Eagle” by the Steve Miller Band.
Rooting for the Raiders.
“You are completely off base about Josh McDaniels, who ran off the future of the Broncos. Denver will be without a quarterback for years, maybe decades, because of the move. I don’t blame wide receiver Brandon Marshall for his actions. The Broncos are looking at 4-12 this year. Personally, I hope 2-14. As a lifelong Broncos fan and season-ticket holder since 1985, I won’t be supporting Denver this year. I will not go to any games. I will not give away or sell my tickets. My seats will be empty until McDaniels is fired. Bandwagon fan? Not at all. Tough love. I’m even doing the unheard of this year: I will proudly root for the Raiders against Denver.”
Fred, Laramie
Kiz: Not to suggest some Broncomaniacs have become a little hysterical in their criticism of Kid McD, but this is some of the funniest stuff I’ve seen since “Saturday Night Live” was at the top of its game. Hey, Fred: Are you really going to let your seats go empty instead of selling tickets for home dates against New Eng- land and Dallas for a little extra spending money? Yeah, right.
Deep thinker.
“You are 100 percent correct that McDaniels has restored the team-first concept in Denver, and strengthened the defense by adding a real coaching staff and new players. I love the guy who wrote he won’t root for the Broncos, won’t use his season tickets and will root for the Raiders until McDaniels gets fired. With that deep intelligence, I wonder what he does for a living? I sure hope I don’t ever need his help.”
Dennis, Spotswood, N.J.
Kiz: I’ve heard of going over to the dark side. But I would like to see a man who has forsaken the Broncos for the Raiders to stand up in the middle of a game at Mile High, announce his intentions and then, you know, see what happens.
No ordinary Joe.
“You aren’t very good at your job, are you? Your column ‘Just say it’s over, Joe’ (June 28) was an utter disgrace to yourself, the Avalanche and the sport of hockey, which I learned long ago you know absolutely nothing about. If it crosses your pea brain to venture up north to do some hack reporting on the 2010 Olympic hockey tournament, when Joe Sakic scores yet again on lowly Team USA, remember the article you wrote.”
Ryan, hockey prognosticator
Kiz: Nine days after I received this e-mail and preserved it for safekeeping, Sakic retired from the Avalanche. Anybody who was cocksure Super Joe would come back to knock the tar out of the lowly U.S. hockey team at the Olympics might want to adjust that prediction a tad.
Start rebuilding.
“I loved Sakic. But it was over for him two years ago. His salary was taking away from bringing in free agents. I know retirement was his call, as it should’ve been. But this is why our rebuilding was put in delay mode.”
Dan, Lakewood
Kiz: If freshly signed center Matt Duchene grows up to be 75 percent of the player and half the man that Sakic was during his storied career, hockey fans in Denver would consider themselves very lucky.
Parting shot
Super situation
And today’s parting shot suggests the future NFL champions will be seen playing in Denver this year, but it won’t be the Broncos, Patriots or Steelers.
“Dallas quarterback Tony Romo breaks up with Jessica Simpson. Are the Cowboys going to the Super Bowl now?”
Pete, Dallas
