Colorado Department of Labor and Employment officials made getting out 20-week extension payments for out-of-work Coloradans a No. 1 priority a day after Gov. Bill Ritter said the department needed to “fix it and fix it with dispatch.”

Officials said Thursday they have tapped the state’s chief information officer, Michael Locatis, to help Labor Director Don Mares figure out the computer system to get checks out to the 5,000 to 6,000 unemployed people who could be affected by delays.

This week, state officials said people eligible for a 20-week extension on unemployment insurance wouldn’t get checks until late August, even though the law granting the extension was signed July 1.
