IGNACIO, Colo.—The Southern Ute tribe of southwest Colorado has been awarded $1.2 million in federal grants to improve housing.

The award, announced Friday, is from a Department of Housing and Urban Development program designed to finance construction and modernization of Indian housing, management improvements and crime-prevention efforts.

Federal law gives tribes the authority to decided how the money is spent.
