The Rapids on Friday signed Facundo Diz, a forward from Argentina who most recently played with Club Athletico Platense. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Facundo adds the depth to our forward line that we have been looking for a long time,” Rapids coach Gary Smith said. “He’s a good physical specimen, good target man, attacks the ball extremely well inside the penalty area, and from where he’s come from he has a wealth of experience.”

While with Club Athletico Platense, Diz, 30, scored nine goals in 15 games. Diz is expected to join the Rapids for today’s home game against New York.

CU recruits in limbo.

Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins said a promising recruit will likely not be with the team this fall, and another is having his eligibility delayed.

Defensive tackle Edward Nuckols, a four-star recruit from San Marcos, Calif., has not yet met NCAA academic standards, Hawkins said. Nuckols will likely grayshirt this season before enrolling at CU in January. The grayshirt means he will not be able to practice with the team before he is enrolled.

Also, quarterback Josh Moten, from Carson, Calif., is still waiting for academic approval from the NCAA. Hawkins expects Moten to be cleared in one to four weeks. Before then, he is not allowed to practice with the team.

CC hires lacrosse coach.

Colorado College hired Guy Van Arsdale as its men’s lacrosse coach, and the move is drawing praise from new Denver coach Bill Tierney. Van Arsdale has been an assistant at Penn State for the past six seasons, and was coach at Rochester Institute of Technology for 12 years. Tierney, who led Princeton to six national championships, called Van Arsdale “an excellent hire. . . . It is tremendous that a coach whom I hold in such high regard is coming to CC.”
