LINCOLN, Neb.—The state Department of Health and Human Services says 539 Nebraska children died in 2005 and ’06, with more than half of the deaths to infants less than a year old.

The Child Death Review Team’s report is required by state law. The team reviews all deaths of children ages 0 to 17 and makes recommendations for reducing future deaths.

Infant mortality rates in the state have declined from 7.4 in 1996 to 5.7 the past 10 years.

A total of 134 deaths were attributable to pregnancy-related causes, a combined category of maternal complications during pregnancy, labor and delivery, as well as prematurity.

Birth defects (102) were the second leading cause of death.

Motor vehicle crashes (77) were the third-leading cause of death.
