The man suspected of killing a Montrose police officer Saturday took his own life, Montrose County Corner Thomas Canfield said today.

Dennis E. Gurney, 52, put a bullet in his head after killing Sgt. David Kinterknecht and wounding two other Montrose officers they responded to his home on a domestic violence report, Canfield said.

Police withheld Gurney’s identity after the gunfight and said they didn’t know if the shooter had taken his own life or been cut down by police.

Police and Montrose County Sheriff’s deputies went to Gurney’s home in an affluent section of town after someone, presumably his wife, Pamela, 50, reported he was abusing her.

Court records show that Gurney was in and out of jail several times starting in September 2008 for violating restraining and protective orders.

A neighbor in the Cobble Creek golf-course neighborhood told the Denver Post that Pamela Gurney had told her that Gurney was abusive.
