A 66-year-old Denver woman remains in critical condition after the pickup she was riding in rolled off a highway in southeastern Colorado on Tuesday afternoon.

The 2006 Dodge Dakota had eight occupants aboard when it left the right side of U.S. 287 about 20 miles north of the Oklahoma border, then rolled twice.

State troopers said there were two adults in the front seats, five children in the back seats and one child riding in the pickup bed. Seven of the occupants were thrown from the vehicle. None was wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

A 1-year-old was declared dead at the scene. The driver, Dannie Loyd, 55, of Denver, and passenger, Ruby Russell, 66, of Denver, were airlifted to Swedish Medical Center. Loyd was released today, and Russell is listed in critical condition.

Three children were airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Aurora. Their conditions are not known.

Troopers said the group was returning to Denver from Texas when Loyd fell asleep at the wheel at around 2 p.m. Tuesday.
