COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Three dozen police officers and 22 firefighters will likely lose their jobs if the Colorado Springs City Council sticks to its plan for covering a projected $23 million shortfall.
Fire Chief Steven Cox met with the firefighters Wednesday to discuss the possible job cuts if the department’s budget is reduced by $3.2 million.
He says firefighters with the lowest seniority were chosen for the possible layoffs.
Police spokesman Lt. David Whitlock says the department is still deciding which officers would be let go if the budget is slashed by $6.3 million.
The city budget won’t be finalized for a few months. Nothing will happen until then.
The city has laid off 200 employees the past two years as its tax revenue has dropped.
