GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—Prosecutors have filed murder and hate-crime charges after a shooting in Clifton that killed one man and injured three others who were celebrating a child’s birthday.

Twenty-four-year-old Michael Simpson of Clifton faces charges of first-degree murder, bias-motivated crime, assault, burglary and crimes of violence.

Prosecutors filed the charges Tuesday. They allege Simpson killed 50-year-old Marco Ramon Acosta-Estrella of Mexico on July 28 and wounded three others.

Names of the injured haven’t been released.

A second Clifton man, 24-year-old Joshua Cole, faces charges of being an accessory to a felony and possession of a weapon by a previous offender.

Simpson’s bail was set at $1 million and Cole’s at $25,000.
