Acting U.S. Attorney for Colorado David Gaouette has been appointed to the job for another 120 days.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder issued the 120-day appointment on Saturday. Gaouette will now hold the job until President Barack Obama names a replacement. If that does not happen within four months, a court will appoint a U.S. attorney for the state.
Gaouette was named acting U.S. Attorney on Jan. 10, after Bush appointee Troy Eid resigned. That appointment expired Aug. 7.
Colorado’s U.S. senators have recommended that Obama choose either Gov. Bill Ritter’s deputy chief of staff, Stephanie Villafuerte; 10th Judicial District Attorney Bill Thiebaut; or Denver attorney and former federal prosecutor John Walsh for the job.
Gaouette, 54, a graduate of Florida State University and the University of Denver law school, has served with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Colorado for 20 years. Before that, he was a police officer in Lakewood and assistant U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C.
