BALTIMORE — Michael Phelps was driving an SUV that collided with another car in Baltimore on Thursday night, but the Olympic gold medal swimmer was not injured, police said.

The female driver of a Honda Accord was “shaken up” and taken to a hospital as a precaution, police said. Two passengers in Phelps’ Cadillac Escalade were not injured, said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Guglielmi said Phelps has been interviewed by police and alcohol was not a factor. No citations were issued and the accident was being investigated, with a report perhaps available today, Guglielmi said.

Pitino receives support

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rick Pitino is not losing recruits as a result of his “indiscretion” — not yet, anyway.

Players who have signed with Louisville remain supportive of the Cardinals basketball coach in the wake of his admitted affair with a woman accused of trying to extort $10 million from him.

Louisville president James Ramsey reaffirmed his support for the coach when he called Pitino “our guy” while leaving a luncheon for the university’s football team.

“We’ll come out of this a stronger university and a stronger community,” Ramsey said.

• Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton signed a five-year contract that will pay him $1.5 million a year with potential bonuses of another half million dollars.

• Kansas signed women’s basketball coach Bonnie Henrickson to a three-year contract extension. She will continue to earn $485,000 annually through the 2013-14 season.

Bond denied for suspect in Forrest murder case

ATLANTA — A 30-year-old man suspected of shooting and killing ex-boxing champion Vernon Forrest on July 25 was denied bond a day after officers pursued him on an Interstate highway and arrested him.

Charmon Sinkfield had his first appearance before a magistrate at the Fulton County jail on charges including murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault. Police say he was arrested the previous night driving a black sedan on Interstate 20 in Atlanta, wearing a wig that gave the appearance of dreadlocks.

Two other men — Demario Ware, 20, and Jquante Crews, 25 — have been arrested and charged with murder in the case, but Atlanta police spokesman Eric Schwartz said they believe Sinkfield was the triggerman. The three of them are scheduled to appear in court again Wednesday.
