A rookie state senator has transformed a vacant building that once was a dentist’s office and a restaurant into a district office he hopes will be a community hub.
Sen. Michael Johnston’s office grand opening is today in Park Hill, across from what the lawmaker calls a “big open hole,” referring to the Holly Square Shopping Center that burned down last year during gang violence.
“There are a lot of folks trying to bring it back, and we thought we could be part of that renaissance,” he said.
The Denver Democrat said he got the idea for a district office while campaigning for the Senate seat held by Peter Groff, who resigned to take a job in the Obama administration. Johnston was appointed in May.
“We found a lot of people who felt like they weren’t engaged in the political process, and they didn’t feel like they had access to their elected officials,” Johnston said. “We felt like it was really important to have a significant presence in the community.”
He’s using campaign funds to pay the monthly rent.
Johnston envisions a center where neighborhood groups hold meetings, kids do homework and local artists display wares. Volunteers have pulled weeds and hung doors, and some neighbors have donated furniture.
“It’s become a real collaborative community project,” he said.
Most lawmakers operate out of their homes or their offices at the Capitol, and it’s unclear whether other lawmakers have set up shop in their district.
“I can’t recall anyone,” said Charlie Brown, the former Legislative Council director who retired in 2003 after nearly 30 years with the state.
