South Santa Fe span dedicated to honor slain Littleton SEAL

Under Senate Joint Resolution 33, introduced by Littleton Republican Sen. Mike Kopp, the major commuter thoroughfare will bear the name Petty Officer Danny Dietz Memorial Highway from its intersection with I-25, just south of downtown Denver, to its junction with C-470. Dietz , who grew up in Littleton and graduated from Heritage High School in 1999, was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005 in a gun battle with Taliban forces. He and his unit were ambushed, vastly outnumbered and surrounded by Taliban fighters when Dietz fought his way to the top of a hill to try to call for assistance. He kept firing at the enemy despite being injured several times and finally fell, mortally wounded. Kopp, himself a former Army Ranger, who attend the observance as will state Rep. Joe Rice, of Littleton, who also serves in the Army Reserve and carried the resolution in the House of Representatives. John Leyba, The Denver Post-->

LITTLETON — State officials and family members of slain Navy SEAL Danny Dietz helped dedicate a stretch of South Santa Fe Drive in the commando’s honor Tuesday.

The ceremony was at Vanderbilt Park, north of West Mississippi Avenue. The stretch of Santa Fe Drive from Interstate 25 to C-470 will be named Navy SEAL Danny Dietz Memorial Highway.

Dietz grew up in Littleton and graduated from Heritage High School in 1999. He was killed in 2005 in Afghanistan in a gun battle with Taliban forces when his unit was ambushed.

Dietz was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross, the Navy’s second-highest medal. The Associated Press
