GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.—The Colorado State Patrol says Robert Habliston, a retired trooper who rose to the No. 2 position in the patrol, has died in a motorcycle wreck.
The 70-year-old Habliston died Saturday when he collided with another motorcyclist on U.S. 550 in Ouray (yoo-RAY’) County. The patrol says Habliston was braking to avoid three vehicles that were stopped to turn left but lost control.
The patrol says Habliston and the other motorcyclist, 50-year-old Bruce Demaree of New River, Ariz., were thrown from their bikes. Demaree was taken to a hospital. His condition wasn’t available.
Habliston joined the patrol in 1965 and was district commander in Grand Junction from 1980 to 1992. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel, the second-highest position, in 1994. He retired that year.
