ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Angels acquired left-hander Scott Kazmir, a two-time all-star, on Friday night from the Rays for two minor-leaguers and a player to be named.

Kazmir was 8-7 with a 5.92 ERA this season for the Rays, who receive left-hander Alex Torres and infielder Matt Sweeney in the deal. Because he was dealt before Aug. 31, Kazmir is eligible for postseason play with Los Angeles. He had to clear waivers to be traded at this point in the season.

Hoffman claimed on waivers

MILWAUKEE — Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman was placed on waivers and claimed by another team, but general manager Doug Melvin said he had not had any trade discussions involving the career saves leader.

Melvin declined to say which club claimed the 41-year-old Hoffman, but reported it was the Giants. Hoffman is 1-1 with a 1.85 ERA, converting 27 saves in 29 chances.

Footnotes.

Cubs pitchers Rich Harden and Aaron Heilman were claimed off waivers, with Harden, a starter, being claimed by the Twins and Heilman, a reliever, by the Giants, according to the Chicago Tribune.

• The Rangers signed Ryan Freel to a minor-league contract. This is the fourth organization for Freel this season.

• The Yankees scrapped their plan for pitcher Joba Chamberlain, opting to give him a regular spot in the rotation for the remainder of the season and shorten his outings to hold down his innings.

• The Twins acquired reliever Jon Rauch from the Diamondbacks for a player to be named and sent right-hander Yohan Piño to the Indians to complete the Carl Pavano deal.

• The Cardinals and NL saves leader Ryan Franklin are negotiating a two-year contract extension that could allow him to end his career in St. Louis.
