DENVER—The Denver Post is reporting that former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff is poised to challenge Sen. Michael Bennet in next year’s Democratic primary.
The Post reported Friday that people close to Romanoff say he plans an announcement next month. The paper didn’t name the sources.
Romanoff didn’t immediately return a phone call to The Associated Press. He was among the Democrats who sought to replace Ken Salazar, who resigned from the U.S. Senate in January to serve as Interior secretary.
Gov. Bill Ritter surprised many of his fellow Democrats when he chose Bennet, a millionaire lawyer and former Denver school superintendent.
Craig Hughes, Bennet’s campaign manager, said Bennet is focused on continuing his town hall meetings on health care reform and the economy rather political.
