MONTREAL — Carl Edwards passed Marcos Ambrose on the final turn to win the crash-filled Nationwide race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, which ended with the cars on rain tires for the second straight year.

Edwards won a two-lap sprint to the finish when Ambrose, who dominated the race, slid sideways after hitting the rumble strips in turn 14. It was Edwards’ first career road win.

Ambrose overcame three other restarts in the final 11 laps of the race, which was plagued by 11 cautions and went an extra lap.

NASCAR Canadian Tire Series star Andrew Ranger was third. Former Formula One star Jacques Villeneuve finished fourth on the track named for his father, and Brad Keselowski was fifth.

Kimi Raikkonen held off Force India driver Giancarlo Fisichella to win Formula One’s Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps, the Ferrari driver’s fourth triumph at the high-speed track in the past five years.

The former world champion, who started sixth, immediately overtook polesitter Fisichella after the safety car came in following accidents on the opening lap — including one involving overall F1 leader Jenson Button — and held on for a 0.9-second victory.

Championship contender Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull, who had retired with engine failures in the last two races, finished third to gain on Button.

Sparks remain on a roll

LOS ANGELES — Candace Parker had 20 points, 13 rebounds and four assists to lead the Los Angeles Sparks, who have won seven of their last eight games, to a 91-81 WNBA victory over the Connecticut Sun.

• Crystal Langhorne had 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Washington Mystics to an 81-75 victory over the visiting Minnesota Lynx.

Shameka Christon scored 18 points and Janel McCarville added 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists in her return from a sprained ankle, leading the host New York Liberty to a 77-63 victory over the Chicago Sky.

Ciolek wins Vuelta stage

EMMEN, Netherlands — Gerald Ciolek of Germany held off Fabio Sabatini‘s late surge to win the second stage of the Spanish Vuelta.

Ciolek won in 4 hours, 43 minutes, 12 seconds. Roger Hammond of Britain was third. Prologue winner Fabian Cancellara retained the overall lead.

Today’s stage will also be held in the Netherlands before the race moves to Spain.

• Hometown favorite George Hincapie sprinted hard the last 100 meters on rainy streets to win the USA Cycling Pro Road Race Championship in Greenville, S.C.

Hincapie, with Team Columbia- High Road, finished in 4:33.36 to win his first U.S. Road Race championship since 2006.

Andrew Bajadali finished second and Jeff Louder was third.

Richards scores in Red Bulls’ win

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Dane Richards scored after a 50-yard run with a loose ball off a corner kick to give the New York Red Bulls a 1-0 upset over Columbus and snap the Crew’s five-game MLS winning streak.
