MOSCOW — Russia’s Supreme Court on Thursday canceled the retrial of four men accused of involvement in the murder of the investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya and ordered prosecutors to begin a new investigation.
The decision appeared to reverse a ruling by the same judges, who in June overturned a jury’s acquittal of the men and ordered them retried. All four were accused of peripheral roles in Polit kovskaya’s death.
On Thursday, the court sided with the slain reporter’s family, which argued that a retrial would deflect attention from the search for the real killers.
