DENVER—Mets third baseman David Wright switched back to his old batting helmet Thursday after trying out Rawlings’ bulky new model.
Wright used the S100, which Rawlings says can withstand a 100 mph fastball, in his first two games following a stint on the 15-day disabled list with a concussion courtesy of a Matt Cain fastball on Aug. 15.
“It’s just not comfortable,” Wright said of the new helmet that will be required in the minors next season. “The last thing I need to worry about in the box is to try to shove it on my head. I will stay with the one I used today.”
Wright had three hits and three RBIs as New York beat Colorado 8-3 to avoid a three-game sweep. The All-Star third baseman went 1 for 3 and scored a run Tuesday, then grounded out as a pinch hitter Wednesday night.
