HASTINGS, Neb.—A Massachusetts team had to go to court for approval to play in a national softball tournament this weekend in Hastings.
The Katman Sports team traveled from Fairhaven, Mass., at a cost of $10,000 to participate in the Class C men’s fast-pitch tournament.
But when the players arrived in Hastings this week, the American Softball Association ruled them ineligible. The association said the team finished too high in the tournament last year and should be playing in Class B.
So, the team went to Adams County Court, saying they were already given the OK to play. A judge agreed and ordered the association to allow Katman to compete.
More than 40 teams are in Hastings for the tournament, which began Thursday and runs through Sunday.
