LONDON — A senior British official says trade and oil considerations played a major role in the decision to include the Lockerbie bomber in a prisoner transfer agreement with Libya.
Justice Secretary Jack Straw is quoted in Saturday’s Daily Telegraph newspaper as saying trade was “a very big part” of the negotiations.
Straw originally tried to ensure convicted bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was exempted from any prisoner agreement with Libya but later changed his mind. Soon after, Libya ratified a $900 million oil deal with BP PLC.
