Talk about a no-brainer. Rockies left fielder Seth Smith was named National League player of the week Tuesday. In six games last week, Smith led the majors with a .542 (13-for-24) batting average, a 1.250 slugging percentage, 10 runs scored and 30 total bases. He also slammed five doubles and four home runs while driving in 10 runs. “It’s exciting, but that’s what I did last week,” Smith said of his first major big-league award. “Now we’re in the middle of a playoff race and I have to worry about today’s game.”
Still streaking.
Yorvit Torrealba’s second-inning single extended his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest of his career and tied with Todd Helton for the longest by a Rockies player this season. He had already surpassed Joe Girardi (14 in 1995) for the longest streak by a Rockies catcher.
