Parker’s Derek O’Neill fired a 3-under-par 69 to lead a group of five qualifiers Tuesday at a U.S. Mid-Amateur sectional at Meridian Golf Club in Englewood.

The 25-year-old O’Neill, a former pro who regained amateur status this year, topped a field of 80 golfers. He finished one stroke ahead of Broomfield’s Jon Lindstrom and Denver’s Jonathan Marsico and Wes Martin. Golden’s Steve Irwin also qualified at 71 by winning a three-way playoff against Michael Harrington of Colorado Springs and James Doidge of Pueblo.

Boulder cyclists national champions.

USA Cycling announced Tom Zirbel and Alison Powers, both of Boulder, are the individual National Racing Calendar champions of 2009.

The 26-event calendar determines the top road cyclists and teams on the pro-am circuit.

Time-trial specialist Zirbel edged Lucas Sebastian Haedo by seven points, 1,127-1,120.

Powers finished with 1,291 points, well ahead of Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong, who did not run a full schedule and had 905 points.

Ulanski returning to Eagles.

The Colorado Eagles re-signed Kevin Ulanski, who was named the Central Hockey League’s best defensive forward last season in voting by players. Ulanski was a member of the University of Denver’s back-to-back national championship teams in 2004 and 2005.

The Eagles also signed rookie Derek Hansberry, a native of Arvada who helped his Midget team win two Silver Stick national titles. He played collegiately at Wisconsin-River Falls.
