Greeley’s Kim Eaton fired an opening-round 72 on Saturday for a share of the lead at the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur at Cascades Course in Hot Springs, Va.

Eaton, who plays out of Riverdale Golf Course, made up ground on the back nine by trimming two shots. Her 2-over-par 72 is tied with Dallas’ Carolyn Creekmore. Anna Schultz of Rockwall, Texas, is one shot back at 73. Durango’s Cindy Bryniarski is six strokes back at 78.

Eaton won the Colorado Women’s Golf Association Senior Stroke Play title in August.

Steinhaus fuels CU sweep.

The University of Colorado volleyball team got a career-high 14 kills from sophomore Rosie Steinhaus in sweeping Cal Poly 25-19, 28-26, 26-24 at the Colorado Invite in Boulder.

Colorado (5-4) finished second in the tournament. No. 24-ranked San Diego, which beat Denver 3-1 earlier in the day, won the tournament with four victories. Cal Poly (2-8) was third and DU (3-7) was fourth.

CSU takes tournament title.

The Colorado State volleyball team won the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., defeating Tennessee 3-1 and sweeping North Carolina to close out the tournament.

The Rams (7-3) defeated the Volunteers 26-24, 28-26, 23-25, 25-13 and then in the night match beat the Tar Heels 25-20, 25-16, 25-22.

Racquetball match rained out.

The International Racquetball Tour had its first-ever match rained out when the world championships at a unique outdoor court in Denver were postponed.

In the first semifinal scheduled, Dallas’ Jack Huczek and Rocky Carson of Ladera Ranch, Calif., were tied 8-8 in the third game after the players split the first two games.

The semifinal round, including a matchup between No. 1 seed Kane Waselenchuk of Edmonton, Alberta, and Shane Vanderson of Tampa, Fla., continues today at 10 a.m. The final starts at 1:30 p.m.
