NEW ORLEANS — Everything was working for Brigham Young on Saturday.

The No. 9 Cougars got two touchdown passes from Max Hall, and Bryan Kariya and J.J. DiLuigi each scored twice on the way to a 54-3 thrashing of Tulane.

BYU (2-0) even got scores from its defense and backup quarterback. The Cougars were so dominant, they didn’t have to punt.

“It shows we are going to come out every week hungry to play and eager to play because we love the game and love to win,” Hall said.

The Cougars got off to a sluggish start following their big win over Oklahoma, managing only two field goals by Mitch Payne in the first quarter. BYU began hitting its stride just before halftime, though, starting a scoring spree of 48 un- answered points.

“Well, you get worn down,” Tulane coach Bob Toledo said. “They wear you down. They’re bigger, they’re more physical. They just keep executing and making first downs and scoring, and they keep you off the field.”

Hall completed 24-of-32 passes for 309 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception, before leaving the game during the fourth quarter.

Tulane, which went 2-10 last season, hasn’t had a winning season since 2002. The Wave was held to 162 yards of total offense, and its hopes of establishing a running game against BYU quickly dissipated. Tulane managed only 37 yards rushing.

No. 16 TCU 30, Virginia 14

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — TCU held Virginia’s new spread offense to seven first downs, and the Horned Frogs breezed to a victory in their season opener.

Virginia (0-2) largely avoided the turnover problems that led to its opening loss to William & Mary, but couldn’t get anything going against the stout TCU defense.

Virginia escaped its first home shutout since 1984 when Jameel Sewell heaved a 56-yard touchdown pass to Javaris Brown late in the game. He added 26-yard TD pass to Tim Smith with 1:48 left.

Before that, it was all TCU. Joseph Turner and Jeremy Kerley had touchdown runs, and Andy Dalton threw a 31-yard scoring pass to Jimmy Young. Ross Evans kicked three field goals.

Tulsa 44, New Mexico 10

ALBUQUERQUE — G.J. Kinne threw for 310 yards and four touchdowns, fueling Tulsa (2-0).

The Lobos (0-2) got their first touchdown of the season in the fourth when linebacker Tray Hardaway returned a fumble 92 yards.

San Diego State 35, S. Utah 19

SAN DIEGO — Ryan Lindley threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another TD to carry the Aztecs (1-1) to a victory.

San Diego State’s Vincent Brown caught six passes for 142 yards and one touchdown. He also contributed a 28-yard punt return and a 36- yard kickoff return for a total of 206 all-purpose yards.
