A Denver man was sentenced to 16 years in prison Wednesday in Denver District Court for the death of a 13-month-old girl who was in his care.
Patrick Romero, 35, pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in the death of Alexia Montoya and received the maximum term requested by prosecutors.
Alexia was placed with her maternal aunt, Antoinette Medina, and Romero, who is Medina’s husband, about a month before she died.
The girl died in October 2003 from blunt-force injuries to her head.
The investigation into Alexia’s death stalled until Denver cold-case detectives renewed the case last year and obtained a grand jury indictment against the aunt and her husband.
Medina, 31, is serving probation for her role in her niece’s death. The Denver Post
