A Denver police officer injured a knee in a tussle with a drug suspect tonight, a spokeswoman for the department said.

The officer was taken to a hospital but was expected to be OK, said Detective Leslie Branch-Wise.

No names were released tonight. His assailant is facing numerous charges that hadn’t been finalized, she said.

The man had been pulled over on a traffic stop at East 36th Avenue and Pontiac Street about 6:45 p.m., when the officer found a powder, thought to be cocaine or methamphetamine, in the man’s vehicle, Branch-Wise said.

As the man was being cuffed, he charged the officer. Other officers quickly interceded to subdue the suspect.
